Q&A

What strains of marijuana would help alleviate the symptoms of ulcerative colitis?

Cannabis use may be fairly common amongst IBD sufferers for symptoms such as abdominal pain, cramping, and appetite stimulation (Lal et al, 2011) and one study in mice suggested that CBD can reduce colonic inflammation (Borrelli et al, 2009). More studies are underway, but these preliminary findings would suggest that a cannabis product with high CBD would be beneficial for the underlying inflammation that causes symptoms, and that the THC component could be helpful for pain, cramping, and appetite. Recently, more and more strains are being cultivated to emphasize CBD, with some that can produce equal parts THC and CBD. Or, you could pursue extracted products where a wider variety of CBD:THC ratios are available, and avoid the need to smoke.
