Macular Degeneration is the leading cause of vision loss and is caused by the deterioration of the central portion of the retina (macula) containing specialized nerve cells called cones that are responsible for color vision and the perception of fine detail.
Both CBD and THC have been shown to have neuroprotective properties, which is why cannabis has been studied as a treatment modality for conditions, such as Alzheimerโs disease, Parkinsonโs disease, Huntingtonโs disease, traumatic brain injury and glaucoma.
In glaucoma, excessive activity of the receptor that releases the neurotransmitter glutamate is the major cause of retina and optic nerve cell death. A pre-clinical study showed that both THC and CBD prevent glumamate-induced-retinal cell death. Interestingly, binding the CB1 receptor — which is how THC causes psychoactivity — was not involved in providing neuroprotection for retina cells.

With this knowledge, I would most likely recommend a high CBD to THC ratio product, such as a 20:1 edible, or a high CBD strain, such as ACDC.
I also recommend cannabis-derived over hemp-derived CBD.
