Q&A

I have severe intestinal pain from having celiac disease, would CBD or THC help with this?

Celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder that can occurs when an individual cannot digest gluten. This leads to symptoms like abdominal bloating, pain, gas, diarrhea, pale stools, and weight loss. THC helps to slow down the digestion and movement of food in the digestive tract. While CBD works with CB2 receptors in the gut, to help against autoimmune attacks on the small intestine caused by consuming gluten. In combination they work best, so you would need both.

Hello,
I agree with helenanp. Anatomical, physiological and pharmacological studies have shown that the endocannabinoid system is widely distributed throughout the gut, with regional variation and organ-specific actions. It is involved in the regulation of food intake, nausea and emesis, gastric secretion and gastroprotection, GI motility, ion transport, visceral sensation, intestinal inflammation and cell proliferation in the gut. Cellular targets have been defined that include the enteric nervous system, epithelial and immune cells. Activating cannabinoid receptors has been demonstrated to inhibit gastrointestinal fluid secretion and inflammation in animal models. Studies indicate that cannabinoids in marijuana bind with cannabinoid receptors in the digestive tract, especially the small and large intestine. Furthermore, both CBD and THC have been shown to reduce the inflammatory response in patients with autoimmune diseases, such as multiple sclerosis, lupus and celiac disease; both CBD and THC have also been shown to help alleviate pain. However, it is mainly THC, rather than CBD, that helps alleviate nausea and stimulate the appetite.
