Psoriasis is an autoimmune skin condition which leads to an overproduction of skin cells called keratinocytes. The immune system mistakes components of the body’s own skin as pathogens, such as a virus or harmful bacteria, that need to be removed from the body. This autoimmune reaction leads to inflammation and an overproduction of skin cells, resulting in scaling, itch and pain. Between 18% and 42%of people with psoriasis develop psoriatic arthritis (PA).
The endocannabinoid system (ECS) is the body’s own naturally occurring network of receptors and cannabinoids that is involved in several bodily functions – immunoregulation being one of the most important and extensively studied. In fact, the phytocannabinoids THC, CBD, CBN and CBG have all been found to inhibit keratinocyte proliferation in hyper-proliferating keratinocyte cell lines, such as those found in psoriasis and PA. Among the four phytocannabinoids, CBD showed the most anti-proliferative potency, and required the lowest plasma concentration to inhibit keratinocye overproliferation.

Further, studies have showed that both endocannabinoids and phytocannabinoids can directly treat the symptoms of psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis, such as pain and itch.

And finally, CBD can treat the the lost sleep, anxiety and depression most psoriasis patients experience. Beyond helping the patient better cope with the emotional toll psoriasis can cause, improving sleep and lowering depression and anxiety can also reduce the frequency of psoriasis flare-ups.
