Q&A

I have high blood pressure and currently take two prescribed medications. My BP is still 142/70 with the medications. Any suggestions to help further lower my BP?

Hello there!
THC temporarily increases blood pressure and heart rate, so it should be taken cautiously if you have significant cardiovascular risk factors.
However, studies suggest that prolonged administration of THC, in both humans and experimental animals, lowers blood pressure and heart rate. Animal studies suggest that this may be due to a reduction in adrenergic tone, which is also how beta-blockers, such as metoprolol, work as anti-hypertensives. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2228270/#R
Also, a study published last year found that a 600mg dose of CBD reduced blood pressure while resting, as well as when under physical or mental stress.

While there are no clinical studies addressing appropriate dosing of cannabis for hypertension, I would likely recommend a high CBD vs low THC containing product, such as a 20:1 edible, oil or spray — 10mg of CBD three times per day. You should keep a log to see if the addition of the CBD:THC has had a positive effect on your blood pressure.
Hope this helps!
