Q&A

Does smoking marijuana cause worsening of Irritable Bowel Disease (IBD) symptoms?

"Will smoking marijuana cause flare ups? I know that smoking cigarettes does."

Irritable bowel syndrome is a chronic condition of the digestive system. Symptoms are abdominal pain and altered bowel habits such as constipation and diarrhea. Many studies have shown that THC reduces intestinal motility which is the spontaneous movement of the bowel. THC alleviates colonic spasms and abdominal pain in IBS suffers. IBS is one of the few conditions that the state of New York allows to be treated by medical marijuana.
