Q&A

Can I use my medical marijuana card from California in the United Kingdom?

No. Marijuana remains a Class B drug in the UK, and anyone found possessing cannabis can be sentenced to a maximum of 5 years in prison, an unlimited fine, or both punishments. Supplying or producing cannabis can result in a prison sentence with a maximum of 14 years, an unlimited fine, or both.

There a small number of cannabis-based pharmaceutical treatments approved for us in the UK, such as Sativex, which is approved to ease loss of muscle control in people with multiple sclerosis (MS). In 2016, the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), the government agency which approves potential new medicines, determined that products containing cannabidiol (CBD) can be prescribed.
