There are four main steps to obtaining a medical marijuana card in New York.

  1. Find a registered practitioner. In New York, only doctors and licensed nurse practitioners that are registered with the state’s medical marijuana program can issue cannabis certifications.

  2. Have a qualifying condition. Only patients with one of these serious, debilitating, or life-threatening conditions may qualify for medical marijuana: cancer, HIV-positive or AIDS, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis (MS), damage to the nervous tissue of the spinal cord with objective neurological indication of intractable spasticity, epilepsy, inflammatory bowel disease (IBS), neuropathy, chronic pain as defined by 10 NYCRR ss 1004.2(a)(i)(xi), or Huntington’s disease. Patients must also have one of the following associated or complicating conditions: cachexia (wasting syndrome), severe or chronic pain, severe nausea, seizures, or severe or persistent muscle spasms.

  3. Register. Once certified by a registered practitioner that you qualify for a medical marijuana certification, you need to register on the New York State Medical Marijuana Program’s website. You’ll need to provide proof your identity and residency. Once your registration is processed, you will be mailed a registry identification card.

Once you have completed these steps, you will be able to visit a registered marijuana dispensing facility to purchase medical marijuana products.

It’s important to note that New York does not accept medical marijuana certifications or recommendations from other states.

In NYS, you must have one of the 11 qualifying conditions to be approved for a medical marijuana recommendation. You must then be certified by a registered medical marijuana practitioner. Upon certification, you must login to https://my.ny.gov/ and click on the "Health Applications" icon and then click on the "Medical Marijuana Data Management System" link to register. Patients who do not have a ny.gov account will need to click the "Don’t Have An Account" button to create a personal ny.gov ID before proceeding. Patients will be required to provide proof of their identity and residency during the application process. Required documents can be found on the NYDOH website.
