Q&A

Can someone with kidney disease use a topical cananbis patch?

Many medications must be used with caution in kidney disease, because if the kidney doesn’t pass the medications through the body effectively, they can build up in the blood. Other times, you can’t take a medication because it is damaging to the kidney itself, affects diseases that affect the kidney (like high blood pressure), or interacts with strong medications used in dialysis or transplants. The active ingredients in cannabis are primarily metabolized in the liver, not the kidney, and the small amounts of cannabis in a patch are unlikely to have interactions with other medications you may be taking, so the answer is very likely yes.
