Q&A

Do cannabis transdermal patches work for chronic pain of the leg and hip muscle?

Yes transdermal patches are great for chronic pain. Topical creams may be better for you since your pain is more localized. I am quoting from an article from our website regarding transdermal patches:
"Transdermal patches are medicated adhesive patches designed to be placed on the skin in order to release small amounts of medication into the bloodstream over a longer period of time. Patches should be placed on a venous area of skin for proper absorption and offer a different type of relief than topical creams. โ€œTopical creams can typically be absorbed by the top 1-3 layers of skin and may offer pain relief locally, to say a shoulder or knee,โ€ Graham Sorkin, of Maryโ€™s says. โ€œTransdermal patches differ from topical creams in that the medicine goes thru all 7 epidermal layers of skin and enters directly into bloodstream. Transdermal patches deliver systematic rather than localized relief.โ€

However, this mode of administration is not available in all states. Please visit your state website to look up what is approved. For NYS specifically, transdermal patches are not approved: https://www.health.ny.gov/regulations/medical_marijuana/faq.htm
