I’ve heard cannabis can help with insomnia. What are the best strains I can buy in Ohio to help me sleep?

Cannabis is a popular alternative to prescription sleep medications. It works with the body’s endocannabinoid system to regulate our sleep-wake cycle and promote relaxation in the body. There are hundreds of cannabinoids and compounds in each strain that work together to produce the effects you feel. Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is the most well-known cannabinoid, and its sedative, pain-relieving qualities make it effective to treat insomnia.
But THC level is not the only way to search for a strain. Depending on the cause of your insomnia, the anxiety-relieving qualities of Cannabinol (CBD) may also help you sleep. And terpenes like myrcene and caryophyllene which are found in cannabis strains are known to promote sleep and relaxation.
Many dispensaries list terpene profiles for each strain, and you can always ask the staff for recommendations.
Some of the most common strains for sleep are:
If you can’t find these exact strains at your dispensary then ask the staff if they carry other strains with similar THC levels and terpene profiles.

Dispensaries in Ohio have a wide selection of strains to buy. Once you register for your medical card, it’s easy to find a dispensary near you. For help sleeping, I recommend Indica strains, which you can buy as flower or vape cartridges.
Ice Cream Cake is one of my favorite strains for sleep and it’s sold by the half-ounce at Ohio Cannabis Company. Most strains with “cake” in the name are Indica-dominant with a relaxing, euphoric feel and a sweet flavor. Willie’s Reserve Larry Cake flower at Herbology is a cross of Larry OG and Wedding Cake. If you prefer cannabis oil, they also sell a Layer Cake vape cartridge by Rythm.
The Dosidos strain sold at Terrasana Dispensary relieves anxiety and depression and also helps with insomnia. The lineage of the strain is Girl Scout Cookies and Face Off OG, with carophyllene, myrcene, and linalool terpenes. It’s another sweet-flavored strain but this one has more of an earthy, musky aroma.
I have to mention Butterfly Effect’s Burkle strain sold at Rise Dispensary, which is an Indica-dominant hybrid cross of Purple Urkle and Bubba Kush. The Burkle strain is one that isn’t too high in THC but still provides a deep physical body high that will get you to bed.

Yet another molecule found in cannabis that is known to help with sleep is Cannabinol (CBN). CBN is created when THC ages, which is why old weed makes you sleepy. Now, CBN is being extracted in the lab and added to products like vape cartridges, edibles, and tinctures to help with insomnia.
Visit Strawberry Fields dispensary in Columbus to buy the Sunset Sherbet + CBN extract pod by Aura for the Pax Era vape. Sunset Sherbet is a great strain for sleep on its own, helping ease stress, anxiety, and PTSD. CBN has been added for extra relaxation as this cartridge is part of their “Meditate” line.
If you don’t already have a Pax device, those are available to buy at most dispensaries. But there are also disposable vapes that don’t require extra batteries. I recommend the Verano Bubba Kush vape sold at Ohio Provisions. It has a four-to-one THC to CBD ratio, which is enough CBD for significant anxiety relief.
Vaping is a convenient way to consume medical marijuana because it is easy and smoke-free. Since smoking isn’t allowed in Ohio anyway, I highly recommend exploring the range of vaporizers and extracts out there.
