"Hello, I am pregnant with severe nausea and Fibromyalgia symptoms. I currently take Gabapentin to manage these symptoms, but am told that it’s bad for pregnancy. I am wondering if it would be better to start taking edibles than to keep taking the Gabapentin, plus I’m hoping it would help the severe nausea. Are edibles okay during pregnancy? Are they safer than Gabapentin?"
Hello, and congratulations!
Unfortunately, we don’t know yet whether cannabis consumption is associated with an increased risk of birth defects or pregnancy complications. However, we are each born with our own unique endocannabinoid system which evolves over time. And because we are unsure about the effects prenatal cannabis exposure may have on the developing fetus, I strongly advise that you abstain.
The safety of gabapentin for use during pregnancy has not been established either. It’s not recommended for use during pregnancy unless your physician concludes that the benefits outweigh the risks.
Vitamin B6 often helps alleviate mild to moderate nausea โ the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) considers it a first-line treatment for morning sickness.
There are several anti-nausea prescription medication that have been deemed safe to use during pregancy โ Zofran and Reglan are commonly prescribed for prenatal nausea.
Please consult with your OB/GYN prior to making any changes to your medication regimen.
I hope this helps!
