Q&A

What would you suggest for high blood pressure?

Hello there!
THC temporarily increases blood pressure and heart rate, so it should be taken cautiously if you have significant cardiovascular risk factors. However, studies also suggest that prolonged administration of THC — in both humans and experimental animals — lowers blood pressure and heart rate. Animal studies suggest that THC’s anti-hypertensive effect may be due to a reduction in adrenergic tone, which is also how beta-blockers, such as metoprolol, work.

Also, in a study published last year, researchers found that a 600mg dose of CBD reduced blood pressure while resting, and when under physical or mental stress. However, 600mg is an unreasonably high amount of CBD.

While there are no clinical studies which address dosing, I would likely recommend that you start with a high CBD vs low THC edible, oil or sprayโ€”take 10mg to 20mg of CBD three times per day. You should keep a journal to gauge efficacy.

Products and strains containing a higher concentration of CBD vs THC, such as 20CBD:1THC, will lessen, or even eliminate psychoactive effects. Products and strains with moderate levels of THC would likely be more effective, but would cause varying levels of psychoactivity. You should consult with a physician who can guide you in choosing appropriate strains, ratios, dosages, etc.

Hope this helps!

I recommend the products offered by Care By Design: I like that they use the whole plant when making their products (rather than isolating only THC and CBD); offer a variety of ratios; offer all routes of administration (other than combustion); clearly label their products in milligrams of THC and CBD per dose; and are relatively easy to find.
