In search of the Big O? A new study shows that in addition to many other sex-enhancing benefits, cannabis can increase the likelihood of a woman experiencing a satisfying orgasm during sex.
Let’s take a look at the study and a few ways you can harness cannabis’s potent effects to make for a more satisfying sex life.

Cannabis’s Role in Increasing Sex Drive & Improving Sexual Satisfaction
This isn’t the first time scientists have studied sex and cannabis. In fact, cannabis has been used as an aphrodisiac in many cultures for thousands of years
We also have plenty of anecdotal stories of cannabis improving sex. In a previous survey based on studies of this phenomenon, more than two thirds of respondents reported that cannabis increased sexual satisfaction and pleasure.
Meanwhile, another study showed that cannabis consumers have sex more than those who don’t consume the plant.

Still, no one had studied how cannabis affects women’s sexual experiences—until now.
Study Finds Cannabis Can Help Women Achieve a Better Orgasm
In this new study from the journal Sexual Medicine, researchers looked more closely at how cannabis consumption affects women’s sex lives. They found that taking cannabis before sex increases the likelihood that a woman will experience a satisfying orgasm.
The study involved 373 women over an 11-month period. Those who took cannabis before sex had 2.13 higher odds of a satisfactory orgasm than those who didn’t.
Cannabis frequency also seemed to affect orgasms. Those who consumed cannabis regularly had even higher chances (an additional 2.1 higher odds) of experiencing that satisfying orgasm.
Most women said that cannabis also decreased pain and increased their sex drive.
Does the Cannabis Strain Affect Orgasms?
So, cannabis can help improve sex, but does strain matter? While this study didn’t discuss specific marijuana strains, others are beginning to investigate how various marijuana strains can impact women’s orgasms
According to the sexual innovators at Lioness, the world’s first smart vibrator, marijuana strain can make a big impact on orgasms. But how the plant impacts your sex life may differ from person to person.
The Lioness vibrator uses biofeedback and data to visualize arousal and orgasm. Using specific patterns of pelvic floor motion indicative of both, Lioness is able to provide data on your orgasms so you can learn more about your own sexual responses.
“With cannabis we’ve been seeing not only interesting/positive effects on arousal and orgasm, but it seems to differ depending on the individual, the method of consumption, amount, strain (indica-dominant or sativa-dominant), etc,” explains Lioness CEO Liz Klinger.
An unnamed member of the Lioness team reported that sativa marijuana strains consistently brought on a quick finish, spurring on her orgasms in record time. In contrast, indicas relaxed her body, providing a slow, sleepy and very pleasurable orgasm.
Of course, another woman gave a very different accounting of strain-enhanced orgasms: For this particular woman, sativas provided a longer-lasting sexual experience, while indicas led her to finish more quickly.
What can we learn from these two accounts? Well, marijuana strains may affect people quite differently when it comes to getting to and achieving orgasms.
We already know this is the case with pretty much every other effect you may be going for when consuming cannabis. What’s relaxing to one person may induce anxiety in another. What makes one person feel happy may make another person feel depressed.
As with all other effects of cannabis, a strain’s effect on orgasm is likely to be very personal. So, you may have to experiment to find the right options for you.
Using Cannabis to Improve Your Sex Life
Ready to start taking cannabis to improve your own orgasms?
You can go about it in so many ways:
Inhaled methods like vaping or smoking cannabis flower can be a great way to go, because they can provide a full body and mind high in a short period of time. A quick inhale a few minutes before your bedroom romp can make all the difference.
For marijuana edibles, you’ll want to eat them one to two hours before sexy time. But they may not be the most convenient consumption method for improving orgasms, because the timing with the effects of edibles can be tricky.
Still, for some people, the heavy relaxing body high that comes with edibles is their favorite aphrodisiac. If this is the case for you, incorporate your favorite cannabis-infused food into a romantic dinner, and you’ll be ready to go when it’s time to head to the bedroom.
You can even use cannabis topicals to boost your sexual experience by relaxing your body. Or in the case of specialized cannabis oils, to apply directly to your sensitive areas for added stimulation.
As we already pointed out, strain preference is very personal and may differ from person to person. That said, there are a few products designed with arousal in mind and are therefore worth trying out. Dosist has an Arouse vape pen, specifically designed to turn you on.
Given the differences in strain preference, it’s not a sure thing that one of these cannabis products will work for you—but they’re a great place to start if you aren’t sure what to try first.
While more research needs to be done to understand exactly how cannabis is pulling off these incredible sex-boosting tricks, the plant certainly seems to help. So, why not try it out yourself and see whether it can help improve your orgasms? The results could be mind-blowing.
